MARTIAL ARTS & SELF-DEFENSE
My fitness journey began with training in martial arts. Training in functional self-defense and combat sports helped me get off my butt and be active. The training was rigorous, with a combination of calisthenics and functional combat drills & exercises.
If you look at most devoted martial artists, they are in great shape. Combat sports athletes like MMA fighters and boxers need to maintain peak athletic performance to be at their best.
Many of my exercises are geared towards functional movements that translate well to "fighting." Explosiveness, speed, agility, coordination, etc.
But a key aspect of martial arts that I value is the skillset you obtain from them. Learning how to use your body to access your "tools" to defend yourself is a big advantage to have over the majority of people.
Not that you will likely get into a fight, BUT, it's always good to know you have something (skills and abilities) that will get you out of a jam!
